The images on my contents used for the Leeds festival article are all my own. I attended Leeds Festival 2014 and took these pictures there. I thought this would be a good use of the pictures as Reading and Leeds is a popular rock festival so it will attract my ideal target audience.

Masthead Re-think again.

It has come to my attention that 'amp', and 'the flip side' are already the names of existing magazines. So i have chosen 'Slash' as my new masthead and it will be a heavy rock magazine.

Re-think of masthead font.

While I do like the font i chose for my masthead, it has come to my attention that it would not look good on my front cover as it wouldn't stand out enough. Therefore I will have to re-do my masthead font research and ask my target audience which they prefer. Here are some ideas;

Final Masthead choice.

Finally I have chosen 'Amp' for my masthead. My target audience prefered this masthead as its short and sweet and is quite modernised so the target audience it is produced for will know that it is a magazine for the rock genre. This masthead will be easy to fit on my front cover at it is only one word so it will not be covered by a photo or cover stories.

Other forms of digital technology I would like to use on my blog.

To make my blog more interesting I would like to use a Slidley to show what I want my models to look like by showing pictures of existing rock models. Also on a Slidley I would like to show loads of things related to the rock genre like rock stars, instruments, concerts, make up and clothes. Doing this will give me a better idea of what else to include in my magazine and what to do on my double page spread. On the other hand I would like to use Polldaddy so people can vote for the ideas they like best and help me develop my magazine so it's the best it can be.

Changes made following target audience research.

Overall I have made quite a lot of changes regarding my target audience research. I have changed my mind on the colour scheme so now it is going to be red, black and white as that is what all the target audience wanted. Following in from that the masthead is going to me 'Amp' as it's catchy, modern and will attract my target audience as they will relate it to rock and know that's what my magazine will be about.

Font for masthead.

For the masthead font I have been doing some internet research and looking for some fonts online. I have come across this font called 'true lies' . I think this font style is suitable for the rock genre and will look good on my magazine front cover. From seeing these examples of what my mastheads would look like with this font I think I am going to choose Amp as my masthead as it's catchy and it looks great with this font and fits my magazine genre.

I have chosen not to go with any of the font ideas i had in my earlier posts as they are all too boring and not very eye catching where's this font will be very appealing and look good on the front cover.

Props, costumes and make up.

For my next photoshoot I would like the models to have dark eye make up, whiter skin and either purple or red lipstick. This time I would prefer them to be in a rock type costume instead of jeans and a Tshirt. The props used will maybe be a black guitar  or nothing. I am not using a microphone as a prop again in this photo shoot as I want a variation in props in the different locations and different backgrounds.

Locations.

The location I would like for my next photoshoot would be somewhere dark and quite scary like a back alley or an old abandoned building. The darkness and eeriness of these locations will make the magazine look more dramatic and eye catching in my opinion. Also it will appeal to the target audience. The model will look more in place in these locations with the dark make up and dark clothes.

University student help.

To help with my magazine I have seeken help off someone who is an ex-pupil who also took A level media at Brigg Sixth Form and achieved a B at the end of his AS course. He is currently doing creative advertising at Leeds college of art. I have asked him a series of questions like what he enjoyed the most when making his magazine, what he found the hardest, if he could do it again would there be anything he would change and finally was he pleased with his final outcome of his magazine. By asking these questions it has helped me as what he said he wish he could change i can make sure that my contents page will be good and make sure i spend enough time on it and it meets the target audiences requirements. Also finding out what he enjoyed or found the hardest helps me as it may give me an idea on what I might also find hard and need more help with. Overall this text conversation has given me a positive outlook for my final magazine as I know what to expect to be doing.

Masthead target audience research and analysis.

From this target audience research I have changed my mind on what I would like to call my rock magazine. My initial idea was 'rockabilly' but after conducting this tally chart and asking my target audience what masthead they would prefer it is quite clear that they would have not liked the title 'rockabilly' very much. I am currently stuck between two names. 'The flip side' which is quite and old rock saying as its what is used to describe the other side of a vinyl record which my older target audience might understand and like more. How ever the other masthead idea I am contemplating is 'amp' as the younger target audience will find this catchy and know what it is and relate it to the rock genre. 

Photoshoot.

I think my photo shoot went pretty well, the models where wearing band Tshirts and red lipstick which is what I wanted them to wear. Their hair was straight as on the photos the tidy hair looked better. I used a guitar and a microphone as props as it made them look like they where in a rock band. Over all I got some good shots of the two girls together then some other good shots of them singlealy.

Evaluation on my prezis.

The prezis on my blog could definitely be improved as most of them have just got a picture/screen grab and then writing. To improve them I could make them more interesting by adding more pictures and less text. On the other hand I could use Slidley which enables me to add music and is an more exciting way of presenting my work.

Colour Scheme Target Audience Research and Analysis.

 

From asking these people about what colour scheme I should use it is clear that my target audience would definitely prefer a colour scheme of red, black and white as yellow does not appeal to them. This has helped me develop my magazine ideas as I was initially thinking of using yellow as a background or font colour in my magazine.

Updated Ideas.

From my research my ideas have changed as now i know what layouts look good and where the pictures should be. Also the size of the pictures on the contents page is important because it shows the difference between the main article and the lesser important article, I shall remember this for my own contents page. My double page spread will mostly be a photo from the photo shoot and then the article in a corner of the page, however the article must be clear to read and not in a small text thats un-readable. The front cover will have one main photo and some other smaller photos and then some little cover stories. I don't want my cover, contents and double page spread to look too crowded and unprofessional. 

Double page analysis 4.

This double page spread is a bit different as the photo takes up the whole double page and the article is actually on top of the photo in small text in the bottom right hand corner. The quote from the band on this page is a lot bigger than other double page spreads i have looked at. I think the bigger the quote the more readers will want to read into the article. This is also another posed photo but it still looks abit natural as they are all sitting in quite comfortable positions. I think i would use this kind of layout for my double page spread as it looks good and means i can use a bigger photo.

Double page analysis 3.

It is clear that most double page spreads will be taken up mostly by photos done in a studio. There are sub headings and quotes clearly shown on this page on the left while on the bottom right there is a little factfile about this band. There is a common colour scheme in these magazines of yellow, black and white. I would not use yellow much in my magazine as i dont think it's a very appealing colour.

Double Page analysis 2.

This double page spread is also mostly taken up by a photo. This is a more professional posed photo which does suit this band more than a silly natural photo.  There is a quote from the lead singer Oli Sykes on the left and then the main article on the right. The text for this article is quite small and might deter people from reading it at first. For my double page spread in my magazine i think i would also use a photo to cover up most of the 2 pages but my text would be a bigger size.

Double page spread analysis 1.

This double page spread is from Kerrang! magazine. Most of the 2 pages are taken up by the photo and this will make readers want to read it more as there isn't as much writing. A Day To Remember is a band i listen to and this photo is a good representation of them and their personalities so in my opinion readers who listen to this band will want to read this article as they can tell its going to be interesting and not fake and boring.

Contents page analysis 4.

     This is again a Kerrang! magazine contents page. It is a different layout from the previous contents page i analysied. I think the variation of themes and layouts Kerrang! do to their contents page is a good idea as its refreshing for their readers and they won't get bored of the same old layout every week. The similarity between Kerrang! content pages are they always have the main article's photo in large on this page.

This is a contents page from a Rock Sound magazine. On this page there is a shot of Matt Skiba. I know this as there is a pull quote from him at the bottom left. This is a quite simplistic contents page yet it still looks neat and suitable for the genre. The text on the right hand side is quite small and a bit hard to read but the smaller text makes the sub titles stand out more.

The black background on this contents makes the photo stand out more as he is wearing a white shirt. The models pose fits with the magazine genre as its a unique and quite strange pose.

Contents page Analysis 1.

This contents page is from the popular rock magazine, Q. Its colour scheme is red, white and black. These colours work well together and are used well on this page. The big picture of Liam Gallagher on the right has taken up most of the page and I assuming that he will be the main story in the magazine as his picture is the one that will draw your attention the most. I would use this sort of layout for my contents page as the more important stories clearly stand out better and the colour scheme looks professional and smart. From my own knowledge i know that this is what the usual lay out is for a Q contents page. The consistency of their contents layout makes them seem more professional to the readers and critics.

Analysis 4

    This front cover is from a popular rock magazine, Q. The colour scheme is very vivid, with mixtures of red, black and white. The picture of Cheryl Cole is very central and a close up head shot. The masthead stands out as its a large font in the top left corner and is a bright colour.

However some fonts on the front could be larger as some of the cover stories are too small to read. As a consequence of the front cover stories being small it may not be as eye catching on the shelf in as shop as other rock magazines are.

The photo is clearly an edited studio shot. Her make up represents the genre as its dark on the eyes with bright lipstick. 

I like the style of this front cover and would probably use this colour scheme and style on my front cover  as it looks professional and smart.

Analysis 3.

This magazine, Kerrang is well known to its target audience as being a very good rock magazine. It is also known for its free posters advertised in the bottom left corner.

I think this front cover as the band Slipknot is very prominent on the front and thats what catches you eye. The masthead is covered by the shot but it still looks good and effective.

Most of the text is at the bottom of the cover and this makes the photo stand out more which I would do on my front cover as none of the writing cover the faces of the band.

The colour scheme is mostly black, white, red and gold. I like the colour scheme as it makes the magazine look smart and each of the different sections of text stand out because of the different text colour used and also so it doesn't blend into the background shot of the darkly dressed models.

On this cover there are 5 free posters advertised. This will definitely appeal to the people who listen to those listed bands. The masthead on this is bold and stands out on the white background and it is still easily readable even though it is slightly covered by the band.

Analysis cover 2.

This front cover has a very nice colour scheme of mostly white and blue and some yellow and red. 
The model, Dave Grohl is wearing clothes that match the colour scheme which i think makes the front cover look more organised and i like the idea of the models clothes matching the colours of the text on the front.

I like the fonts on the cover as they vary and stand out against the background although overall the font use does make this particular front cover look less professional.

The masthead is the first thing that drew my attention on the cover, it is very clear and a good size. It is in the usual place at the top which is good as it leaves a lot of space for front cover stories ect. Unlike other front covers, the shot on this cover is behind and not covering the masthead. In my opinion it looks better if the shot is behind the masthead as i don't like the idea of covering half the masthead.

The only negative on this front cover in my opinion is the small writing in the bottom left hand corner and how it doesn't look as professional as other front covers and this may deter people from buying it when they see it on the shelf.

Overall i think this magazine cover suits the genre and appeals to the correct target audience.

Analysis of Rock magazine covers 1.

The shot on this cover is full length and covers a bit of the masthead. However the bottom half of the shot is covered by the free CD.

The cover stories on the right hand side are quite small and that is what i don't like about this front cover. 

Following on from that i don't like the colour scheme of black, white and gold.

The font used is serif, and i think this font suits the genre of the magazine as its not got any flicky bits on the letters.

The advertisement of the free CD is a good addition to the front cover as it will attract readers to buy the magazine especially if the CD includes songs/bands that interest them.

Over all i think this front cover is a good representation of the genre as it has a suitable band on the front.

Why I did a classical front cover analysis.

I did a classical magazine front cover analysis even though my genre is rock because I wanted to make sure I didn't include any of the features in my magazine that where on that particular front cover. I think this was a good idea as it'll give me pointers as to what type of font and colour scheme I should include on my front cover so it'll attract the appropriate target audience.

Examples of Rock Magazines.

All these Rock front covers have a large studio shot on the front and the masthead put behind the top of the photo. Then underneath they have in bold the name of the band that the photo is of. They all have multiple cover stories in all different colours, sizes and fonts which makes the cover look lively and appealing to the target audience.

Choice of genre for my magazine.

The genre i have chosen is rock. I am looking forward to doing this genre as I like and listen to a few rock bands. It looks like an interesting genre to choose as i can be creative with my models when i take photos for the cover and i can think of lots of stories i can include on the cover and inside the magazine.

This front cover is very eye catching as the masthead is quite large and covers the top of the cover and the image fills in the rest of the cover. I would probably use this style on my magazine front cover as it looks smart and is eye catching and the masthead is the first thing that you would look at and it would draw your attention if you saw it on a shelf in a shop.

The whole theme and layout of the front cover is suited to the classical genre. It appeals to the target audience. The target audience would be adults as i know that this genre is more appealing and popular with adults and older people as teenagers and young people do not listen to this type of music often.  The woman holding the violin represents that it is clearly a classical magazine as a violin is a commonly used instrument for classical music.

The front cover is quite simple and this is expected from this genre, as if there was much more on the cover it would look too overcrowded and would not suit this genre.

The model on the cover is dressed in a red dress to suit the colour theme of the front cover. She is suitably dressed and looking away from the camera to give off a peaceful and mysterious effect.

Front cover analysis 1

This front cover shot was taken in a studio. You can tell its been taken in a studio because of the lighting which is making her stand out and the background is white. The way the main cover story title is linked in with the picture as the title is 'kicks off' and Lily Allen is kicking the 'K' down which is quite clever and eye catching. The clothes and make up Lily is wearing match the genre the magazine. The colour black theme in the photo is also matching the magazine genre.

         

The cover stories are all in different fonts and size. I think this makes the stories and writing stand out and more clear to read. I prefer the cover stories to be different fonts and sizes as it looks eye catching.

         

 The masthead is at the top left in the corner. Even though its in the corner it still stands out against the white background and the size of it is eye catching too. I like the idea that the masthead is only one letter and is always in the same spot and the same colour. This makes the magazine easily recognisable on a shelf and doesn't make the front cover look cluttered or messy.

      

The colour scheme of this magazine is white black and red and a little bit of blue. This is a colour scheme suited for both genders and the colours work well together.  The little bit of blue text makes that particular cover story stand out more than the others as its a totally different colour than the rest of any of the other cover stories.

Evaluaton of my College Magazine.

From designing my college magazine i have learnt how to use adobe photoshop and how to work and use the camera properly so i get the right shots. I am pleased with my front cover as its exactly what i wanted. The text stands out and the colours work well together with the model's clothes as they're black and white too.
