One of these photos are what i am going to use on my front cover. The lighting on both is really good and it improves the quality of the photo. These shots will be altered so they are medium close ups and will fit on my front cover. I prefer the shot on the left so that will be the one i will probably use on my cover. The use of natural lighting on these photos instead of a reflector gives the photo an even more natural look.
The rest of these shots are not going to be used as they are either too far zoomed out or the background isn't suitable.
You say the background on the rejected photos is not suitable, yet it appears to be the same as the one you chose to use. All your shots are portrait which is excellent. I see you have used natural light without a reflector. A comment on how this represents a college magazine or links to your main story line would be useful.
